In a recent television interview, Daymond John looked back on his 17-season run on Shark Tank, sharing candid stories about why he almost turned down the opportunity and what has kept him invested ever since. The full interview can be viewed on YouTube.
Daymond John joined The Jennifer Hudson show to talk all things Shark Tank.
Daymond revealed that he initially declined the offer to join the Shark Tank. At the time, the 2008 financial crisis was unfolding, and his apparel business faced new challenges. However, he ultimately saw the show as an opportunity to diversify into industries such as electronics, beauty, and accessories. “I thought the show was going to last one season,” Daymond John admitted, reflecting on how the series has now spanned nearly two decades.
He also shared that part of his motivation for joining was the chance to pitch television ideas to producer Mark Burnett. Those ideas were quickly dismissed, but the unexpected outcome led to a long-standing role on one of television’s most successful entrepreneurial platforms.
During the interview, Daymond John spoke about the dynamic among the Sharks, offering insight into his fellow investors. He praised Lori Greiner’s track record, noting her dominance in consumer product sales, and described Kevin O’Leary as the “scariest” Shark to pitch to because of his direct, unfiltered feedback. Despite the competitive environment, Daymond John emphasized the camaraderie that has developed over the years.
Now entering its 17th season, Shark Tank remains a cultural and business staple. Through his continued presence on the show, Daymond John reinforces a message that has defined his career: success often begins with taking calculated risks—even the ones that were never part of the original plan.
