I also feel that internship and experience is the best teacher in business. I started my first business eight years ago and went through alot of ups and downs..during my down times I took up employment and volunteered within agencies in the same field as my business. This gave me an insight on what mistakes I was making in my own business as well as help build a social network for the future. I also began to take business courses and gained the educational component on my own. In the classroom, due to my experience, I excelled faster than my peers. I was a late bloomer as far as college was concerned…but now I consult companies and foundations who’s employees have multiple degrees but still have no clue or vision on how to advance their organization.

Back in the day people could start businesses without any formal training and perform services by word of mouth. I do believe that hands on experience is better than any book knowledge. Situations and reactions can present themselves different every time, textbook procedures should only be considered when the situation calls for them. No matter how things are written it does not mean that the circumstances will be the same. In some fields people may have gone to school and still do not know what they are doing, but as long as they have a degree they are hired. How many internships are offered at your business throughout the year? Companies usually only wanna use very few people. An intern is a free worker, why not have each person in the company followed by an intern? More production may get done because two heads are better than one. At any rate people nowadays should know that not having a degree hurts because even if you have been answering phones, taking messages and getting coffee for someone you cannot be a secretary without a paper stating you have gone to school to learn such skills.

I think alot of people may struggle with the idea that they already know how to do certain things so why do they need to “waste” time and go get a degree to officially say they can do what they already know how to do.
